Description

These Classic Smash Burgers boast an irresistible flavor with double patties and crispy edges, topped off with oozing cheddar. Perfect for a quick dinner or a cozy meal, this recipe is easy to prepare and sure to please.

Ingredients

Scale
  • pounds ground chuck (80% lean ground beef)
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tablespoon vegetable oil, for cooking
  • heaping ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns (lightly toasted, if desired)
  • burger toppings of choice

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, ground mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Avoid adding salt at this stage.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 large meatballs, approximately 4½ oz each. Flatten each meatball into a 1-inch thick disc and smooth the edges. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes or up to 24 hours before cooking.
  3. Heat a 12-inch cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, ensuring your exhaust fan is on. Season the patties with salt.
  4. Coat the hot skillet evenly with vegetable oil. Place the patties in the skillet, firmly smashing each one to a thickness of about ¼ inch before adding the next.
  5. Cook the patties for about 2 minutes until they are browned and crusty on the bottom. Flip the burgers, adding cheese on top, and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes based on your desired doneness.
  6. Serve the patties on buns with your choice of toppings.

Notes

For the best flavor, use freshly ground beef with a good fat ratio.
Smashing the patties ensures a crispy outer layer, enhancing the burger experience.
Uncooked burgers can be frozen for up to three months. Defrost overnight in the refrigerator before cooking.
